John N Buchholz

Loma Linda University School of Medicine
Loma Linda

Expertise: Cardiovascular physiology

John Buchholz received his PhD in Pharmacology from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1988 and did his post-doctoral training in vascular neuropharmacology with Dr. Sue P. Duckles at University of California, Irvine College of Medicine from 1988-1992. In 1992 Dr. Buchholz returned to his alma mater as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Physiology. In 2001 Dr. Buchholz became a Full Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Pharmacology with 21 years of teaching experience in pharmacology and physiology.
He has had a long-term interest in the contractile function of cerebral blood vessels and function of sympathetic nerves innervating these vessels. Blood vessels themselves and sympathetic nerves modulate cerebral blood flow under stress conditions and Dr. Buchholz has studied mechanisms underlying age and developmental changes in their function. He has engaged in studies on calcium regulation in smooth muscle and in sympathetic nerves integrating measurements of dynamic calcium transients in blood vessels in response to changes in arterial pressure and dynamic calcium transients in isolated sympathetic nerves.
Dr. Buchholz has also studied the molecular expression and function of critical proteins that determine smooth muscle phenotype and sympathetic nerve function contributing to critical knowledge on mechanisms underlying developmental, hypoxic stress and age related alterations in the function of calcium regulatory systems in both cerebral arteries and sympathetic nerves.
